Neurooseja, opinnäytetöitä ja Herra Ämpäripää

Matkasin siis viime torstaina Janin luokse Joensuuhun. Matka oli puuduttava, (koskapa 5,5h istuen ilman järkevää tekemistä olisi nautittavaa) mutta uni auttoi matkustamisen jouduttamiseen. Perillä olinkin sitten 20:35 ja yllättävää kyllä, juna olikin ajoissa.

Perjantai alkoi kello 6… aamulla. En edes muista koska aiemmin olisin noin aikasin herännyt. Oltiin noin klo 7 koululla, hengähdettiin hetki ja sitten törmättiin Annaan, Villeen ja Sillaan, myöskin muihin luokkalaisiin, joista ei ole enää niin vahvaa muistikuvaa. Janin osuus alkoi noin klo 8:45 ja Jani sai xHTML+CSS Survival Kit:n arvosteluiksi mm. “Loistava oppimateriaalipaketti“, “Jos kerta tämä on myös näkövammaisille saavutettava, en enää keksi muuta saivarreltavaa” ja muita kehuja ja ylistyksiä.
Vaikka pidin muutamasta muusta opinnäytetyöstä paljon, Janin oli kyllä paras.

apexSeminaarin jälkeen siirryttiin kaupan kautta takaisin Janille, söimme ja katsoimme Baltarstar Galactica-elokuvan, jonka jälkeen vielä pari jaksoa. Ville lähti meidän kanssa kuvaamaan Joensuun iltaan. Kuulin mielenkiintoisia juttuja niin Joensuusta kuin asukkaistakin. Näin myös jonkun kapuavan parvekkeelta paloportaisiin ja tulevan kiireellä alas, mielenkiintoista.

Kuulin myös ettei irc-kanavallemme uskalleta enää tulla koska siellä on “karvaisia ja lävistettyjä ihmisoikeusaktivisteja“, en minä nyt oikeasti niin pelottava voi olla vaikka noihin kaikkiin täsmäänkin. :D

Viikonlopun tarkempi sisältö ja aika-jana on vähäisen unen ja kummallisten asia-yhteyksien takia vähän hämärän peitossa, mutta erittäin kivaa oli. Pelattiin Starcraftia, käytiin kuvaamassa, suunniteltiin Hollow13.net-sivustoa eteenpäin. Minä sain viimeintuna:n julkaistua, järjesteltiin Janin työpöytä ergonomisempaan järjestykseen (tapahtumaa Jani kuvaili neuroottiseksi) ja Janilta löytyi tuoreempaa MSI:n materiaalia josta junamatkalla takaisin oli paljon hyötyä.

Jossain välissä sunnuntaita Ville ja Silla tulivat ja kävimme ottamassa Herra Ämpäripäästä kuvia kellarissa, minä ja Silla vertailtiin kumpi liikkuu yli enempi, Silla voitti lonkkatempullaan. Illemmalla yritin saada timelapse-kuvasarjaa illan tapahtumista ylös, mutta koska en aiemmin ollut kyseistä funktiota käyttänyt kamerasta, tuli kuvasarjasta köyhät 14 kuvaa usealta tunnilta. Ei aina voi onnistua.

Maanantai-aamu koitti ja 3,5h yöunien jälkeen ei enää aamu kuudelta herääminen tuntunut niin pahalta (tai sitä ei siinä koomassa enää tuntenut). Jani lähti kouluun hajoilemaan ja minä pakkasin laukkuni ja lähdin puuduttavalle kotimatkalle kohti Tamperetta. Kotona olinkin sitten 7 tunnin jälkeen neljän aikoihin.

Semmoinen reissu tällä kertaa, takaisin viimeistään Ilosaaren karkeloihin.

Summer is almost over

Now that there’s less than 3 weeks to september and fall, it’s good to start listing stuff that I did this summer.

I was actually challenged to do this by Jani and Maria.

  • This was my 3rd festival summer. I was on 2 festivals as a customer (Provinssirock and Ämyrock), worked on 3 festivals (Sauna Open Air, Value Life 2007 and Simerock) and saw 26 different bands. (Listing can be read from the end of this post.)
  • I drove over 3500km. Provinssirock trip was ~750km and Simerock trip alone was ~1300km. I like to drive, it clears my head.
  • Learned the basics of Devil Stick. (I can do this, this, this and this already.)
  • Worked on various projects at work and at home. At one point I had 5 projects active at the same time, started to get bit hard to manage.
  • Watched 20 movies and 3 seasons of various series and I also listened to 845 different tracks 916 times.
  • Saw Nine Inch Nails for the second time and Placebo for the first time live.
  • Got new ideas for various projects that will be taking place under the Hollow13.netdomain.
  • Felt better, happier and more productive than I have for long long time.
  • Got to know myself better.
  • Helped people in various code and design projects. People helped me in my projects.
  • Consumed 8 pints of beer.
  • Designed 2 themes for the blog.
  • Took about 150 photos, but released only 9 of them.
  • Went out to play water fight with Maria and to get wet bare-feet during a downpour of water.
  • I didn’t burn my skin this summer so well I usually do.

This just might be one of the best summers ever. Even thought I spend much time inside, coding and designing, I had a lot of fun while being outside.

One last thing to do before summer is over; swimming. I haven’t done that yet this summer. It’s not too late, is it?

 
One of our biggest and most time consuming projects, our own self managed server, valontuoja.net is starting to form itself nicely. Originally, parts of our little Hollow13 network was scattered around the internet on various servers. Sites of mine and the co-founder of H13 and dear friend, Jani, has lived on the same server since the early 2003, from the foundation of H13, but now we all, members of H13 and Valontuoja, relax on our own little piece of internet. The server we are renting is a VPS, but it does the job well. As every new thing, we’ve had our problems, namely memory- and mysql-related, but everything has been running nicely for now as we upgraded the server a bit (we have now the memory and swap capacity × 4, processor speed × 2 and harddisc space × 2). For me personally this has been an excellent learning tool. I’m just learning system administration, but what better way to learn than being able to run a live server, taking care of all the little things as they come by? Nothing beats the old conquer as you encounter-style. The amount of websites that reside under the hood of Valontuoja at the moment of writing is 14 and the numbers are growing every month. Mostly the websites are Wordpress-powered blogs, but we’re hosting couple of band websites and artist portfolios as well. The name Valontuoja originates from a CMX song “Aamutähti” on Discopolis-album. The name “Aamutähti” can be translated as “morning star” and what we are meaning by it is the planet Venus. We have some community-related projects coming up some time soon and I’m really excited about them. Some of them has been announced a while ago and some that only resemble the original only by name. The projects will be mainly just get better at coding, but doing something useful as training. As a side note; I’ll try to write something more often, but work and laziness has been keeping me away from doing it. Ok, that’s about it for the day.

Project: Wallpaper testing site

You might remember (or not) a script I created to test out website backgrounds.

Yesterday, I had some spare time and guess what, wallpaper.darkbase.org was re-coded to 1.5 version.

I’ve been collecting logs for the project since it first started and I’ve been amazed how well and how much it has been used. Thank you all who has been using it.

HotLinking is something that shouldn’t be done, but if you don’t have any other choise, I won’t deny it. Just keep in mind that I’m not responsible if your images change or do not show anymore. You just have to relink or find a steady host for the couple of kilobytes worth of image.

Anyways, something extra sweet was added to the system, now you can check how the background works with black, or white backgrounds. All this has been done by using simple javascript.

Project: Robot

I’m presenting to you; The Robot!

Meet Robot, the talking robot. Here’s a robot that says randomly things. Clever, ain’t it? You can add your own thoughts to power it’s random selection of thoughts.

All the images should be packed so the load times should be small.

You can take part in this project and add your random thoughts to the Robot’s database!

v. 1.0 - 2005/10/27 - Initial release

  • Public stuff: Add, List, Random, Statistics, ID (display one based on ID).
  • Behind the scenes: Over 500 lines of code, coded in 2 days, 1st public PHP/MySQL project from me.
  • Database: Started with 121 thoughts and 507 words.
  • Admin area to approve/add/delete items.

Edit Nov 5th 2005: Status (after 10.92 days): 167 thoughts and 864 words. Average count of words is 5.2.
